Are you disillusioned with the current political parties?
Left Unity is working towards forming a new political party with new ideas!

The need for unity is paramount! As attacks on the living and working conditions of ordinary people intensify, and the very fabric of our welfare state is being destroyed.

The need for cooperation amongst those of us who seek to bring change to our society is vital, to enable us to overcome the obstacles of the first-past-the-post electoral system.

The task is urgent and the time short. The welfare state and health service is being dismantled by the coalition government, bringing great suffering to the most vulnerable in society and eroding the living conditions of millions of ordinary people.
The Labour Party is not presenting a strong opposition to austerity and instead appears to have wholeheartedly adopted neo-liberal policy, advocating its own brand of austerity and privatisation.

Ken Loach’s film “The Spirit of ’45” gives us a perspective on the achievements of the post-war generation, transforming the lives of ordinary people by bringing improved health, housing, education and Welfare to the people of Britain. We need to defend these achievements and continue the tradition of protecting the most vulnerable in society. Support Ken Loach’s appeal.

Left Unity supports taking essential services back into State control, ensuring that groups of people are not discriminated against, sustainability, caring for the environment; finding non-violent ways to sort out conflicts, and presenting an economic alternative to austerity for the majority, changing the economic system to benefit everyone – (not just those who have money and power!)

One Response to Launch meeting of Loughborough LEFT UNITY

  1. Ruth says:

Left Unity groups are today being set up all over the country. In November there will be a national conference to launch a Left Unity Party. We therefore invite you to attend on 19 June to launch a Loughborough and Charnwood group. Please advertise this meeting to anyone else you think might be interested.

We are witnessing challenging political times. People are alienated from the three main centre-right parties who are bereft of new ideas and whose culture has atrophied. Yet voting patterns are more volatile than since 1945 and millions want to see action taken against corporate tax avoidance, parliamentary sleaze, press phone-hacking and the obscene bonus culture of the already super rich. Others question why ordinary people have to pay for an economic crisis created by the bankers and financial speculators.

Millions are looking for different answers. Trade Union membership has increased for the first time in years to 6.5 million. Preparatory meetings for the People’s Assembly against the Cuts to be held in London shortly have attracted hundreds. Organisations like Citizens UK are reviving community action, while 38 Degrees, with its online e-petitions on issues such as the bedroom tax, has attracted 1.5 million members. But where can we find a party that offers a socialist alternative and puts people before profits.

Many Labour Party members work hard for it, believing it is the only answer to the Coalition’s relentless attacks on the welfare state and public services. But the average Labour activist is not amongst those most badly affected by austerity and privatisation, not in the same predicament at the 500,000 dependent on charity food banks, or the same age as the majority of the unemployed. This may be why they are unable to acknowledge Labour’s refusal to seriously challenge the cuts, or offer any more than yet another round of the failed neo-liberal economic policies that caused the crisis in the first place.

The supporters of the status quo in Britain are wrong. If you are sick of being lectured by the Murdoch press and ruled by ex-Public School boys and multi-millionaires in the Coalition cabinet – if you think it’s time to campaign for social justice for the many rather than privilege for the idle few, then join us! Why compromise our ideals any more? We can build a party that celebrates multi-culturalism, that campaigns to reform our out-moded voting system, that is informed by feminism and the Green agenda. A party whose foreign policy is based on nuclear disarmament, international co-operation, solidarity and world peace.

Unite with us and help make this happen.
